Case Studies - Network Transformation Programme

Client

Cloud Migration Solutions were the technical design partner for SmartSourcing, who provide consultancy solutions to their clients, in this instance the Department for Education.

Challenge

  • Complex, high-profile and politically sensitive programme of works.

  • The end-client adopted a cloud first digital strategy; however, still utilised an antiquated legacy network.

  • The network had organically grown and was designed with physical data centre hosting in mind.

  • Fundamental issues with routing and latency caused operational performance and management issues.

  • Security vulnerabilities resulted in the network being a severe business risk.

  • Could not scale to meet the ever evolving demands of the business.

  • Issues exacerbated with a convoluted cloud network and hosting landscape.

Requirement

  • Provide the end client with a series of design options and artefacts.

  • Take into consideration costs, risk and functional / non-functional requirements by exploring scenarios i.e., do nothing, do something, full transformation.

  • Analyse and identify high risk issues from discovery, and/or recorded in risk and technical debt registers, also trends from service desk incident, major incident and requests.

  • Identify and design around the business and operational functional / non-functional requirements.

  • Reduce the time of business and digital strategies deployment to market.

  • Design with future hybrid/native network strategies in mind.

Activities

  • Discovery of the legacy technologies and the capture of detailed site audits.

  • Host workshops to identify the client’s functional / non-functional requirements and present them in a MoSCoW style.

  • Host a range of technical workshops with suppliers and manufacturers, adhering to government procurement standards, to match the requirements to a series of new technologies.

  • Produce a series of design options, each requiring a passport, high- and low-level design artefact with technical and management commentaries.

  • Build a proof of concept running a full suite of operational, load, performance and end-user acceptance testing to prove the validity of the designs.

  • Produce an analysis of the requirements to identify if, how, when and cost to fulfill.

  • Produce a full implementation cost analysis and risk reduction profile for each of the design options.

  • Attain authorisation of the design and supporting artefacts by the end clients Technical Design Authority and independently by Gartner.

Delivery

  • Operated at C-Suite level and chaired programme boards,

  • Agile, MSP and PRINCE2 disciplines.

  • Lean Six Sigma productivity best practices.

  • ITIL service delivery.

  • Rigorous governance across all delivery execution activities to safeguarding success.

  • Provided regular quality assurance reviews to our clients to maintain transparency and delivery confidence.

Technologies

  • Meraki for the Local Area Network (LAN) and Wi-Fi networks

  • Palo Alto physical next generation firewalls - at each of the remote locations.

  • Palo Alto virtual next generation firewalls - cloud boundary protection.

  • Palo Alto SD-WAN.

  • Palo Alto for a cloud VPN solution and on-premise.

  • Microsoft Azure Virtual WAN.

Benefits

  • The end-client received a comprehensive options papers with complimentary design and commentary.

  • The programme also delivered a detailed roadmap of Continuous Service Improvement (CSI) and work package definitions to enable the end-client to make an informed decision on how they could improve their network at a pace and priority suitable for them to achieve their end-to-end transformation change.

Outcome

The programme over ran by two months impacting on budget due to a change in priority by the department caused by the impact of BREXIT and COVID.
